Next Level Production:
Additive Manufacturing as a
Competitive Advantage for SMEs

Additive manufacturing – better known as 3D printing – is transforming industrial production. For small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), it opens up new opportunities: more flexible processes, shorter supply chains and more sustainable production solutions. But where exactly do the real potentials lie – and how can they be harnessed in a commercially viable way?

As part of the Interreg DE-NL project Manufacturing NextMaterials (MNM), experts from the Rapid Technology Center (RTC) at the University of Duisburg-Essen will provide a compact overview of current developments and real-world applications.

The webinar will focus on five key topics:

  1. Technological foundations & potentials: Which processes (metal, polymer, hybrid) are most relevant for SMEs – and where does it make sense to get started?
  2. Economic aspects & business models: When is additive manufacturing cost-effective – and what new models arise from digital spare part storage or local production partnerships?
  3. Legal & normative framework: Which standards, certifications and legal considerations should SMEs be aware of?
  4. Sustainability & resource efficiency: How can additive manufacturing contribute to saving materials and energy?
  5. Practical examples & best practices: What can be learned from successful applications in industry and crafts?

Your perspective matters: after the webinar, we will conduct a short online survey to identify which topics are of greatest relevance to you. Based on this feedback, we will develop the hands-on workshop in February 2026 at the RTC Duisburg, specifically tailored to the needs and interests of participating companies.
